SOLAR
(Study of Latino Adolescents at Risk of Type 2 Diabetes)
SOLAR is a 9-year project examining the longitudinal changes in metabolic and physical characteristics in overweight Latino adolescents.
Investigators hypothesize that increased acquisition of visceral fat and decreased physical activity contribute to the development of insulin resistance, ß-cell failure and the onset of type 2 diabetes in these children.
This is one of the first longitudinal studies observing metabolic changes through puberty, especially among high risk ethnic groups, including a focus on how these changes may influence risk of diabetes.
