    SOLAR
(Study of Latino Adolescents at Risk of Type 2 Diabetes)

  • SOLAR is a 9-year project examining the longitudinal changes in metabolic and physical characteristics in overweight Latino adolescents.

  • Investigators hypothesize that increased acquisition of visceral fat and decreased physical activity contribute to the development of insulin resistance, ß-cell failure and the onset of type 2 diabetes in these children.

  • This is one of the first longitudinal studies observing metabolic changes through puberty, especially among high risk ethnic groups, including a focus on how these changes may influence risk of diabetes.
